Worship Crafted is designed as a collection of three cohorts, supporting young adults as liturgical apprentices in practices of Word, Art, and Bread.

WORD

The Word Cohort pairs college students with experienced preaching mentors in a structured, year-long apprenticeships designed to form student preachers through both instruction and practice. Each student is matched one-on-one with a mentor who provides personalized guidance in the craft and theology of preaching throughout the program year.

ART

The Art Cohort gathers college students who are musicians, visual artists, designers, videographers, and other creative practitioners into a year-long liturgical apprenticeship in worship arts. Working alongside instructors drawn from local seminary faculty and university partners in music and the arts, students learn both the historic heritage of liturgical arts and the craft of creating new works that serve vital worship today. The component has two interlocking tracks: the Worship Arts Workshop and the Motor City Hymns Project.

BREAD

The Bread Component gathers culinary arts students alongside experienced local practitioners of liturgical baking — the faithful individuals of Detroit-area congregations who have been breaking bread for their communities for years and who carry within them a living tradition they are eager to pass on.

Together with bakers, food artists, and culinary professionals drawn from Detroit's churches, restaurants, and bakeries, this cohort forms a cross-generational apprenticeship in the theology and practice of bread as an act of worship.

This component is grounded in a conviction that baking is not merely preparation for worship — it is itself a form of worship. The hands in the dough, the patience of the rise, the breaking and sharing of the loaf: all of it participates in the ancient, embodied language of the church gathered at table.
